Irrigation and climate change: a digital response

The alteration of the hydrological cycle caused by climate change has made the availability of water for irrigation increasingly uncertain, even in areas where water resources have always been considered abundant.

In this context, the analysis of irrigation systems is essential, but tools such as agro-hydrological models can be difficult to use.

This is why IdrAgra WEB was created: an interactive GIS platform that allows users to explore different scenarios for the use of water resources for irrigation, evaluating different combinations of irrigation methods, crop types, and meteorological data, both historical and derived from future climate projections.

Landscape

From the farm to the irrigation district scale

The platform is aimed at professionals, farmers, irrigation consultants, irrigation district technicians, and anyone interested in optimizing the use of irrigation water and assessing the effects of possible interventions or external pressures.

Agricultural field

Irrigation consultants

Irrigation consultants can use the platform to provide technical support to farmers in the optimal management of irrigation.

Farmers

Farmers and those working at the farm scale can assess changes to the crops being grown or investments in alternative irrigation systems, while always taking local conditions into account.

Irrigation districts

Irrigation districts can assess the introduction of irrigation in specific areas or interventions on irrigation networks and methods, as well as the effects of these changes on water allocations.

A model for everyone: pre-processed data and guided workflows

The IdrAgra WEB interface makes it easy to manage the area of interest and define the combination of crop and irrigation method to be simulated. The platform then provides pre-processed data concerning soil type, terrain morphology, and multi-year time series of agro-meteorological variables, also taking into account short-, medium-, and long-term climate projections.

The user can then run the model without having to worry about creating input files or analysing the outputs.

IdrAgra WEB is based on the agro-hydrological model IdrAgra, used to estimate the daily irrigation water requirements of crops.

The use of numerical models can be complicated for non-specialists due to the large amount of input data required and the quantity of outputs generated.

Technical reports: support for decision-making

Users can build different scenarios (e.g. current conditions; introduction of irrigation or interventions on irrigation networks and methods; changes to the crops being grown; climate change; etc.) and obtain an interactive visualization of the results for each scenario, including charts and statistics, as well as a detailed, editable technical report, ready for use.
